Dulac, Leyte 1604: Back to the Future

 

A Dance theater production using Filipino Sign Language showcasing recently uncovered information on use of sign language by Jesuits in the Visayan missions in the 16th century. Voice interpreting provided.

       The Philippine Federation of the Deaf in partnership with the Internacional Teatro Silencio Filipinas presents “Dulac, Leyte 1604: Back to the Future” on 13 December 2004 at Father Blanco’s Garden- San Agustin Church, Intramuros, Manila at 7pm.

       The production is the culminating activity of a three-week long Deaf Acting Workshop of thirty young Deaf actors is supported by the National Commission on Culture and Arts under the training of Deaf director and choreographer Dennis Rhoneil Balan and Myra Medrana. The production shows recently uncovered information by the Philippine Federation of the Deaf and Philippine Deaf Resource Center on the use of sign language during the Visayan missions of Jesuits in the 16th century.

       Current popular knowledge only recognizes the influence of American Sign Language beginning 1907. This first-ever production highlights the indigenous origins of Filipino Sign Language three centuries before the influence of the Americans. The production is supported in part by the Boysen Philippines, AVON, Jesuit Communication and Nippon Foundation.
